The German Antarctic research base Neumayer III is maintained by the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven. This station, the latest to bear the name Neumayer, has only been in operation since 2009. The base sits on hydraulic pillars to keep it raised above the snow that constantly accumulates around it, as it slowly inches its way with the Ekstrom Ice Shelf towards the sea. The German Antarctic program is serviced by the icebreaker Polarstern which divides its time between Arctic and Antarctic research missions.
Philatelic Mail for Neumayer Station Logistik-Abteilung Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung Postfach 12 01 61 27515 Bremerhaven GERMANY
You cannot send philatelic mail directly to Neumayer III. Instead you need to send it to the Alfred-Wegner Institute in Bremerhaven with a note requesting that your cover be sent back to you from Neumayer III. The cover will be brought to Neurmayer where they apply their base stamp and then returned to Bremerhaven where the stamp is postmarked and the cover placed in the mail stream.
Additional information about polar philately and other stamp-related topics can be found in my Blog
